FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
ABOUT THE PROJECT
The Louisiana State Medical Society (LSMS) recently announced a new partnership with KaMMCO Health Solutions (KHS) in support of their mission to improve the health of Louisiana through both interoperability and transformative data analytics. An LSMS physician-led advisory board will work with KHS to establish this statewide health information network, allowing connected physicians to share patient information while employing powerful analytic reports designed to help improve clinical outcomes, reduce inefficiencies, and positively impact patient safety.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Who is LSMS?
Established in 1878, the Louisiana State Medical Society (LSMS) serves as the trusted advocate for physicians in the state of Louisiana. LSMS aims to promote excellence in the practice of medicine and is the largest voluntary physician organization in the state, representing all specialties.
Who is KHS?
KHS is a physician-led subsidiary of the Kansas Medical Mutual Insurance Company, KaMMCO, a medical professional liability insurer affiliated with the Kansas Medical Society. The KHS provider-led approach uniquely positions it to help physicians, other health care providers, integrated delivery networks, accountable care organizations, and others seeking to improve patient outcomes and adapt to new performance-based payment models through the use of data analytics and business intelligence tools.
What is LSMS partnering with KHS to do?
LSMS is working with KHS to establish a physician-led health information network in Louisiana to allow connected physicians and hospitals to share patient information. As a result of establishing the network and data warehouse, this HIE will be able to deliver powerful analytic reports designed to help improve patient encounters and clinical outcomes while empowering physicians as they transition to the new models of health care delivery, quality reporting, and performance-based payments.
When will KHS begin this work?
From an organizational development perspective, the work has already begun. The soon-to-be-named entity will implement a 2018 physician and hospital participation recruitment strategy. As the new organization forms and the necessary policies and pricing structures are finalized, more information will be made available.
Who benefits from this new HIE?
Patients and physicians across the state, especially the members of the LSMS, will realize the benefits of such a forward-thinking endeavor. While using connectivity to improve patient point-of-care encounters, this collaborative effort will empower LSMS physicians as they transition to the new models of health care delivery, quality reporting, and performance-based payments.
How will this HIE be different?
This physician-led approach, combined with the proven model in Kansas, positions KHS to serve as a trusted partner to LSMS in the development of the health information network to support performance-based payment models, care management, and data analytics that will ultimately transform health care delivery across the country. There is not a health information network in Louisiana now that is delivering actionable intelligence such as this to its physician and hospital participants.
How is the new HIE financed?
There are costs to establish the data sharing technology infrastructure and business intelligence reporting capabilities. The unique factors in the KHS equation which help keep the fees reasonable are two-fold: the physician-led approach which ensures physician needs are at the forefront of the LSMS effort combined with KHS’s already proven technology vendor relationships, integration protocols, and project team expertise to deliver the products at a reasonable expense in Louisiana based upon a subscription model.
How are physicians and LSMS members updated on the new health information exchange?
As the new organization forms and the necessary policies and pricing structures are finalized, more information will be made available on the LSMS website, lsms.org, in LSMS membership publications and newsletter, and once launched, on the HIE website.
What other states besides Louisiana are operating through KaMMCO Health Solutions?
In addition to the Louisiana State Medical Society, KaMMCO Health Solutions is now working with the Medical Association of Georgia, the South Carolina Medical Association, the Connecticut State Medical Society, the Medical Society of New Jersey, the Missouri State Medical Association, and the Kansas Health Information Network.
